I agree, the more radical branches of PETA definitely qualify as terrorists.
I'm all for the humane treatment of animals, but I prefer The Humane Society.
And I disagree, animals are treated inhumanely every day to satisfy the food industry's quota and people's demand. You don't have to look very hard to find numerous videos of pigs (who by the way, are about as intelligent as dogs) spending their entire lives in cages they can barely turn around in, and cows who can't stand any more being dragged to slaughterhouses.
Also, click to Animal Planet and you can watch the officers who spend their entire lives working against inhumane treatment, busting up dog fighting rings and punishing those who leave their pets out to starve and die of sickness. (So WHERE are the PETA people when the real hard work begins??)
And, you can "look at the past" too, exotic animals have been maltreated over the ages, the most bloody and well known, the animals caught and killed for sport in the Roman Colleseum. There have been canned hunts since the British began exploring and wanting to keep "trophies." Those haven't stopped today, even though they are technically illegal in most places.
. . . I'm not even going to bother commenting about the fly thing, pffft

Posted in: General ChatQuote from Hobo »What do you guys think of Objectivism? I'm curious because I've been reading some Ayn Rand and want to know what others think.
Puh-lease. I watched a couple of her interviews.
She wants people to dole out love as they see fit, a rebellion against the "unconditional love" taught by Christianity (and, she claims, other "institutions" like Harvard?) To only love those that you think are worthy of love. BUT, my question is, WHO is to decide who is deserving of love? WHAT exactly is you standard? You don't know the other person. What if a person that you like, who you want to love you back, has some obscure standard you have to reach before they love you . . . and, in order to conform to their standard, won't you be impeding your own view of what you should be? This just doesn't sound like a formula for happiness to me. I'm not even going to get into my beliefs on the transformative power of loving people as they are . . .
Also, she says not to make decisions based on emotion. Okay, I agree with that in some ways, you should use good judgement. Then she says, the reason she supported her husband (even though in her absolutist definition this wouldn't make any sense, because financially she should only care about herself) was that she derived a "selfish pleasure" from being with him. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in my mind, this is an emotion . :|
I am tired of the phrase "pursuit of happiness" being used to justify selfish ends.
The trouble is, she doesn't take into account that true "happiness" is achieved when you care about other people. it may be an inconvenient truth (oh, no, I'm quoting Gore, danggit). But she's preaching an absolute that cannot be acted on. We are social beings. Its how we evolved. Or, if you prefer, it's how we were meant to be.
We would like to be able to be completely rational, logical beings- exhibit A, the iconic characters, "Vulcans," from Star Trek, who supposedly have no emotions.

And thus the cycle continues. . .
This thread actually reminds me of my "something to think about" thread. We should all have a basic respect for each other, and teaching that respect is very hard.

Posted in: General Chatthe case is clear today that secularism is on the rise
Which is unfortunate, because even without the belief in a deity, humans are spiritual beings. We have spiritual needs that will be swept up by fixation on the physical world. *sigh* Even pantheists, who are a subset of atheists, recognize this, and I think Taoism . . .?Their freedom ends where my rights begin
Still trying to articulate what's wrong with this statement.Let's get along. Okay, I'm Catholic. Okay, you're atheist. Most people aren't going to change who they are in this stage of their life. That's fine. Let's just get along. Why do we have to flame? Why do we have to expect to be flamed?
Thank you, St. Francis. We are all people, after all. Respect is in order.

@ Topic creator: This topic is civilized so far, I'll lock it when things get out of hand.
Thanks. After all, my LARGER point was that we should all be civil to each other. That would be ironic in the most horrible way if this thread were locked because of that. =(
. . .Anyway, while I'm here:people can trust god without realizing it
they plant seeds in the ground and trust that God will turn it into a plant
That's more like putting trust in the way things usually turn out :? Trusting God is more like believing that he does have a larger plan for us, and that we can help him further that plan.

I'm independent. I don't vote for people just because they're in specific parties. Vote on the issues!!!!Posted in: Polls, Surveys, and Opinion
But just to say, I don't want an UBER GREENHORN (Obama) to run our country. But I'm not old enough to vote,(just missed it by a month!!! ) so my opinion doesn't count (or in this case, "get counted" )

Get this. I am a perfectionist. Like, I obsess over every detail of everything. BUT I am also a procrastinator. How is that possible, do you ask? I don't know; I wish I did . . . :?Posted in: General Chat
