Kuro and his family had heard the news of a meeting occurring for the entire kingdom. This was a very rare scenario, as getting the entire kingdom together was no small task. Immediately after dinner, they left for the meeting. The family discussed what could possibly have called for a meeting the whole way there, and due to the huge amount of people that needed to go, this discussion was a long one. The Ibekus finally reached the area where meetings were held. They saw absolutely everyone they knew, and a few others.
His eyes caught those of Tatsuyama Naruko, his lifelong enemy, daughter of a rival farm. Since the harvest was happening, tensions were at their peak between the families. The Ibekus lost 10% of their crops when a fire broke out in their field. It was obviously Tatsuyama's family that did it, but the police did nothing. Kuro knew, however, that they were paying off the police. Right now, though, that didn't matter. The meeting was just beginning. A man approached the stage, and gave the news of the stolen Artifact. After a short speech, he called for volunteers to help recover it. Mumbling in the crowd grew, and families discussed what they should do. It give make this kingdom the glory it deserves. At first the Ibekus wanted no part in this, but then Donyo got an idea.
"Kuro, if we did this, it could boost our farm far past the Naruko's farm, and bathe us in riches!" he whispered. Kuro looked to his mother, as did Donyo.
"I will not allow both of you to leave. Sure, it would really help the farm, but before the Artifact is even found, the farm would go under," she replied. Kuro thought about this for a bit, as Donyo sunk back into his chair. Thoughts raced through Kuro's mind, and suddenly he felt himself standing.
"I volunteer," he spoke bravely. Donyo sat back up, in shock. He was about to stand, but his mother held him down.
"It is done," she whispered to Donyo. "I'll only allow one of you to go, and it seems Kuro has taken the initiative."
Donyo's face of shock became a grimace, as the first seeds of jealousy planted themselves. A guard on stage asked, "What is your name, son?"
"My name is Kuro Ibeku. I think I will be invaluable in your expedition."
