Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate & the Infinite Labyrinth

The newest game in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series — Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth — was recently released in Japan. I'll be starting a written walkthrough for the game in the coming weeks, as I play through it, but in the meanwhile I've decided to share my video playthrough of the game with you so you can get an idea of what the game is like.

Visually, Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth is stunning, having visuals that look at least as good as what's on the Nintendo Wii. The gameplay feels very solid and responsive from the twenty or so minutes I've played around with it (so far, at least!), but one point that will sadden a lot of fans of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon series is that personality tests are no longer used to determine your main character. You just choose them. While that will be seen as a plus to many players, the problem is there are only five main characters you can even choose from: PikachuAxewSnivy, Tepig, and Oshawott.

No international release date has been announced yet, nor has an English name of the game been given. We'll be bringing more coverage of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth over the coming days and weeks, don't worry!

By the way, if you are fluent in Japanese and would like a chance to help with this walkthrough project and video series, please let me know in the comments or by e-mailing me at marriland@marriland.com.

    I wish I could help with the walkthrough, but I'm not sure if I fit into the fluent category. xD I've studied Japanese for two years, but I wouldn't consider myself fluent lol.

    Well, a good measure is how much of the text of the game were you able to read. ;) I'm obviously looking for fluent readers/speakers, but any help in translating or understanding things would be excellent. :D

    Yes, I've been looking forward to this game coming out, but I wasn't sure if you were going to do coverage, Marriland. Glad you are~! I'm not a fan of Snivy, but I think I died of squee overload when I saw it in game. Sooooo cuuuute~! I really do wish I knew what they were saying, like you said, the storyline in PMD is always amazing. Tearjerking, really. ;w;

    I wasn't sure if I was going to, either, but I decided, oh hey, I'll try it out, why not! :lol: I've heard mixed reviews about the game; not having a real good comprehension of the plot is going to hurt, though. :( Hopefully it is at least as good as the last two!

    Well, even if you don't understand the plot, it'll be good to have the game mechanics and other secrets under your belt for the English version. I'm OCD in that way. Even if I know I'm going to buy a game, I love to watch play-throughs and read reviews to make sure I don't miss anything once I get a game.

    My only concern with this game is that it may be a lot shorter than the other ones. I worry that the 3DS can shine pretty, but might not be able to hold as much content as, say, Explorers of Sky or something. Or perhaps I'm only under that impression because they took out so many starter Pokemon. Guess we'll find out~!

    I would just worry about replying to certain things. I know in the old games your partner asks you lots of things and you have to agree or disagree. Not knowing what they're saying, I'd be afraid to say something rude to my Pokefriend. D:

    The game looks OK, but the worst problem to me is that they took out the personality test. It was so fun in Blue Rescue Team!

    Totally have to agree with you there, that was one of my favorite parts. It was unique and clever, and it's a real shame they took it out. I hope that doesn't subtract from the game as a whole, though. Maybe they let you make some choices in game that effect the events depending on what you choose or something like that, I think that would be pretty cool to see in a Pokemon game.

    I wish either: a) this was for DS or b) I had a 3DS, because I've always enjoyed the PMD games.

    I was so excited when I saw that I didn't have to take a convoluted personality test to pick which Pokemon I wanted to be! Before, if I wanted to play a Squirtle, I had to do SO MUCH of looking things up on the internet! What a pain.

    I'm also really excited because of the new attacking system. No more going into menus and setting a new attack to use when you run out of PP! This game is so much more convenient.
